So, last year I squeezed two perennial gardens into our little yard in South Minneapolis. One with different kinds of hosta under a huge pine tree and the other in a sunnier spot with flowering perennials. I was pleasantly surprised with how the yard looked by the end of summer and was looking forward to taking on another area of the yard this spring. I'm a new gardener so I'm still surprised when I plant something and it makes it through the summer. And then...the next year it comes back and looks even better than the year before. Amazing!
So this year before we moved out of our house a lot of the plants were coming up and filling out. I would sneak out there (between packing boxes) and push back the mulch to see new shoots coming up. I couldn't believe I wasn't going to get to see it all in full bloom, but I was still so excited that it had survived the winter and was coming back.
Also, I keep finding myself wanting to take Minnesota plants with me, hostas in particular. (Yes, I know they sell plants everywhere, Dan) They are so easy to split and impossible to kill, everyone has them (the hosta is Minnesota's unofficial state plant) so most people want to share them. Then you have a piece of a friend's garden in yours. Maybe that is why I want to take them with me because then I feel like I'm taking friends with me on this move too. So is it weird when walking through the neighborhood I find myself looking at other people's plants and thinking "would they mind if I took just this little section?"
All that said, I'm having a really hard time as I have nowhere to garden this year, but the following year I will have a whopping five acres to fill. Thankfully I have two friends adopting me as an "assistant gardener" in their garden this year, which will be fun. But I'm already making plans for a trip back to Minneapolis next spring to beg, borrow and steal as much hosta as I can. :)
Sarah I would love to give you perrenials for your 5 acres! Thanks for blogging!
